This specialist Aircrew item was designed to act as a harness release knife, used to cut seat or parachute harness straps in the event of crash or other emergency. Its concave razor sharp blade can slice through tough webbing straps without danger to underlying clothing or body parts. A lanyard of white nylon cord and cleat are supplied to enable the knife to be attached to the cloth scabbard holder. The holder is then stitched to a flight or assault suit in the desired position for quick and easy access.

This knife has also found favour with the elite Counter Revolutionary Warfare Wing of the British Special Air Service, whose troopers stitch this item to their assault order to be used in case of snagging of Abseil (Rappel) lines. These knives were carried during Operation Nimrod, the 1980 assault to rescue hostages held inside the Iranian Embassy in London.

Spring loaded clips release the knife from its metal sheath only when required, the Olive Green fabric patch which holds it also houses a lanyard and cleat to secure the knife to the patch to prevent loss.
